Another week slides by and things in the Marnoo area look as good as anywhere, let’s hope by the time you read this another dollop of rain will have eventuated.
I’m told the “Royal” pennant team has made the grand final, this is a huge effort because I think they dropped a game earlier in the season. I’m sure they will perform admirably.
They football reunion late in July shouldn’t be an event to be missed, let’s hope that everyone who was involved with the club at the time can make it along. I’m looking forward to the interview with former coach “Jumping” John Drum, I’m pretty sure things haven’t changed to much.
I’m told that former native Anthony “Son of Jim” Barham got a mention on the footy show a week or so back. A question was aimed at his former boss Eddie “Gone” McGuire about his appointment at Carlton with another former Magpie Greg Swan. Eddies simply said “Next Question”. Obviously he doesn’t like people leaving the Magpie nest.
Laen legend Ross “Ha Ha” Loats struck success over the weekend by winning Australian cock of the year. He has been breeding his feathered friends for many years now and winning this event would like winning the Melbourne Cup for a horse breeder. When interviewed on the news he simply said “Well I think we’ll breed from him, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha”
I went to the footy on Saturday night with three former natives, Brothers Andrew (Clown), David (Towser) Newall, John “Fruity” Nisbet and myself joined the other 60 odd thousand in what was a close and exciting game. The two Newall boys follow in their famous father’s footsteps by following the Bombers and as you know I am a Tigers man and “Fruity” as you know is a one eyed Bulldog. I asked him who he was barracking for and he said “Tigers because bloody Webb barracks for Essendon”. We were somewhat out numbered as the Newell boys Uncle and Cousin (on Helens side) who were sitting next to us also followed the Dons.
Another cousin to the Newalls is Cam Howat who plays on the wing for the Tigers and he managed to get us in the Tigers rooms after the game in the hope that I (yes me struggling little reporter from the banks of Lake Mulwala) could get an interview with the great man “Richo”. Unfortunately Richo had to knock back the interview as he was a little bit angry.
“She ain’t over (The drought) til the creeks are running and the dams are full” that’s what local legend John “Jack” Cameron told me some time ago and I would have to agree with him as things can dry out quickly.
There was a few belly laughs from the locals down Wallaloo way last weekend as the Glendemar crew have decided to do a bit of pasture cropping (sowing cereals into winter dormant perennial pastures). Having sold the grouper 3 or 4 years ago it was back to the bags. I’m thinking there wouldn’t be too many around that use bags these days.
