Another week just flies by.
Welcome to another week of the SLF and it was good to see that some got some rain over Easter. Autumn has really kicked into gear and it is very noticeable in the mornings how the chill factor has changed.
Wedding of the year.
I’m told that the Tanya Duxson wedding held at the signature Wallaloo East property “Linden” was a huge success. Apparently they were going to get married on top of Mt Bolangum but the weather was just to cold. So they decided upon the woolshed. Parents Norm “Guru” and Margie “Guru Margie” would have been as proud as punch to see daughter # 2 off there hands. I’m told the setting for the marquee which was situated in the NNE of the house in the cow paddock was a real highlight of the evening. Congratulations to all concerned.
Home ground advantage
I’m only guessing but I recon Armand “Herbie” Duxson would have put in a big one at the wedding. The big fella has an appetite for the brown juice and with home ground advantage I recon he would have pinned the ears back.
Jacks Back
It’s like Paul Keating returning to politics, no not really but it was good to Marnoo East legend John “Jack” Cameron back in the establishment of Friday night. That is the first real sign of recovery!!!!
New room
They tell me the “Landing” at the golf club is really taking some shape and should all be finished in the next week or so. I’m told it’s that big that leading lady veteran Joy “Joybells” Newall would even struggle hitting from one side to the other. Leading local “Grollo’s”, Johnson and Johnson are supervising the overall building but many native and club members are chipping in with some help. I’m looking forward to a visit.
Membership woes
Andrew “Hummer” Mirams (Brother in law to Graeme “Grey skies above” Ellen) and a couple of Melbourne finance guru’s aren’t happy with the price of golfing memberships in Melbourne. So what do they do? They consult President Grey skies and he tells them to join up at Wallaloo for $50, that way they can retain there handicap through golf link.
Is the footy over?
Do we just give Geelong the premiership now and all go and play golf for the winter? I can imagine that one cocky Corowa taxi driver would be thinking along those lines.
Daylight saving
Alright I’m a bit of a fan of daylight saving but I recon it has just gone on a bit long this year. I am a morning person but the 7am sunrise this early in the year is a little hard to take.
Enough from me

Welcome
Welcome to another week of the SLF. Easter has come and gone and it’s good to see some rain around the state.
Big spenders
Marnoo was in spotlight once again on Good Friday as it raised over $4000 for the Royal Children’s hospital appeal. The main offender was the auction at the corner shop which was well attended and raised around $3500. A great effort by all.
Wheat growing heaven
I found a book in the bookshelf called “Good country for a grant” which was written by Robert Kingston and it’s about the history of the Stawell Shire. It has a very good chapter on Marnoo and tells, how the Richardson Valley which included Wallaloo, Wallaloo East, Callawadda, Marnoo, Marnoo West and Waranooke was the best wheat growing country in Victoria. Apparently in 1910 the Marnoo station took 70,000 bags of wheat along with 11,000 bales of wool.
Races a big event
I attended the Stawell races last Sunday and once again it was a very big event. Seen out and about were Sandy “The Know All” McGregor, his brother Jock “Sock” McGregor, Gary “Larry” Cameron, Maree “Retired” McGregor, Damian “Major” Drum, Dwain “Daryl” Duxson, Paula “Nearly 40” Bell- Duxson, Stewart “Smacka” MacPherson, Armand “Herbie” Duxson etc etc. All the above where well behaved and I have nothing scandalous to report, wink wink!
Competition
Local funnymen Rueben “Rostron” Cheesman and Stewart “Smacka” MacPherson were contesting vigorously at the field days whilst working for Nigel “Winebar” Slee. Apparently the contest was who could sell the most gear, well according to Smacka it was 1 nil his way.
Duo out and about again
The duo (Smacka and Rostron) were at it again at another gig, this time hosting and driving a gang of ladies around the Moonambel wineries, it was Tanya Duxson’s hens night and according to mother of the hen Margie “Guru Margie” Duxson “they were in very good hands”
Cricket wind up
It was good to see Trevor “Junior” Pickthall take out the cricketer of the year for Marnoo this season gone. But according to my spies he wasn’t the star of the show, I’m told the Captain led from the front!
Average up
I read in the paper that Laen Budgie breeder Ross “Black Balls” Loats averaged a staggering 91 in the Wimmera Mallee cricket Association B Grade competition. The bloke must be over 60 years old.
That’s all for this week.

Welcome
Another week has passed us by and it’s nearly Easter. Can you remember what you did New Years eve? It seems like yesterday when it was actually 2.5 months ago. How time flies.
Spies quiet
My spies have been quiet, it seems they have bunkered down during the change in the sporting seasons and nil contact is coming forth. Oh well I will just have to do what I usually do and make it up (only kidding)
Golf back on the radar
I actually pulled the golf clubs out for the first time since Corporate Cup on the weekend and managed to make use of my membership at the 45 hole layout here in Yarrawonga. It was a charity day for an organisation called the Godfathers, they help sponsor young kids who are pursuing excellence in their chosen field throughout the region. I think over 350 played in the day long event over the two magnificent courses, The Murray and The Lakes. A big day.
The Golden Bear
I played stableford in a four with natives Glen “Wally” Brear, Terry “The Madman” Brear and Brad “The Bear” Forrester. The Bear used to be a pro and his claim to fame was he had a round with the legend of golf The Golden Bear himself. Forrester is now retired from the circuit but still plays a mean game having shot two over despite the many beverages consumed.
Corporate Cup
I’m probably getting a bit ahead of myself here but already they are talking about the Corporate Cup over this way. The ladss that came along last year have told the natives here that’s it’s a “must attend” event. Brad “The Bear” Forrester is sponsoring, as he has a pro shop in Wodonga. He tells me he has already put a dozen packs of a dozen golf balls aside amongst other things.
Heat wave
I don’t have to tell you guys how hot it been as it seems that you have been coping Adelaide’s weather in the Western part of the state. Let’s hope this brings on an Easter break for the farmers as we need to build up that valuable moisture.
Jacks almost back
SLF favourite John “Jack” Cameron is recovering well according to number two son and Mayoral candidate Gary “Larry” Cameron. I’m told he even enjoyed a beer the other day, thank goodness for small mercies.
Footy’s back
Footy is back on the radar and I see where a couple of experts have tipped my team Richmond to finish 16th again, now that’s not very encouraging but we are used to that.
Anyway that’s all for this week, have a good Easter

Welcome
Hello and welcome to another week of the SLF, Some farmers would be looking skyward in hope of an early break to the season just so we can get some valuable moisture in the ground. Let’s hope that this year is a boomer.
Easter
Easter is just around the corner and once again we have the annual auction at the pub. It has always been a wonderful event and raises some valuable funds for a great cause, I think the Marnoo district does a great job raising what it does each year. It’s a town definitely punching above its weight when it comes to the Royal Children’s Hospital appeal.
Moving
I’m told that a leading Wallaloo East land baron is leaving to move into town and have the number 1 son take over the reins. I’m not saying too much just in case I am speaking out of school but I am onto it and will have more in the coming weeks.
Three wise monkeys
Well what a team!!! Machinery Entrepreneur Nigel “Winebar” Slee has employed two fellow ratbags as his number one selling team at this year Wimmera Machinery Filed Days. Stewart “Smacka” MacPherson and Rueben “Rostron” Cheesman as his key strike team. I’m just wondering if they competed favourable with the O’Connor stand as leading consumers for the event. One things for sure there would be plenty of information flowing from the mouths of those three.
Mulesing
The mulesing debate has flared again and it’s not to long before it’s about to be outlawed. But the challenge for the powers above is to come up with an alternative by then. Well my spies tell me that there is not too much on offer and breeders need to start thinking about their breeding plans as I believe genetics is the only answer.
Cricket lose
My fellow Yarra resident Dwain “Daryl” Duxson’s cricket team coughed up another grand final going down by 3 wickets, the former Marnoo opener did manage to get a few but in the end it wasn’t enough.
Farmer
Leading farmer Brian “Farmer” Healy is heading South, no he hasn’t moved he has just secured a sharefarming arrangement down Wallaloo East way. For years the Farmer has been wanting some Wallaloo country to play with, well now he has some the pressure is well and truly on.
Cheers for now

Hello and welcome to this weeks SLF, I have been a little slack in delivering the “files” whilst OS, so I hope not to much damage is done.
The trip
My trip to South American countries Chile, Uruguay and Argentina was fantastic to say the least. The majority of people in these countries live very simple lives and they seem to be very happy. It seems to me to be a great way to live, much less confusing than the type of life we seem to live here in Australia. It’s not that I’m defecting to Chile or anything like that I’m just saying we can learn a thing or two about how they go about it.
Long flight
Going away is great but retuning home as even better, but you do have to make some sacrifices and one of those is long plane trips. It was 30 hours by the time we left BA until we arrived in Melbourne and that included four different planes. But we cannot complain as in the old days the ships would have taken 3 months!!
Wally
Sometime Marnoo resident Wally “Wallace” O’Connor is thriving in his role as head sheep shager (classer) for MPM South America. I managed to spend a few days with the big fella and really does have the Spanish down pat.
Cricket over and out
The MCC lads missed out on the finals this year which was disappointing. All was not lost according to my spy with Captain Gary “Larry” Cameron doing a great job. He managed to introduce a lot of youngsters to the team which augers well for the future.
Steak on the lake
Swill on the hill, steak on the lake, its great to see these community events being put on by the supporters group, I would suggest that the community get right behind these event as it’s a great way to catch up with people you don’t see that regularly around the traps.
Jacks back
Its great to hear John “Jack” Cameron is back home after his operation, heres hoping he makes a full recovery so he can get back and do what he does best, entertain the natives.
Wedding of the year
I’m told the Winebar wedding went off really well with MC Ben “Glendemar” Duxson doing a great job. He managed to interview mother of the groom, June but he didn’t get much out of her as she was giggling too much. Can’t imagine that!!!
Golf at the Royal
I see where the working bees have started at the Royal so that is telling me that the golf season is not to far away. Won’t it be great to see the grace of Bruce “Boofhead” Hendy, the power of Stewart “Smacker” MacPherson, the guile of Greg “Golfer” Reading, the putting prowess of Norm “Guru” Duxson and antics of John “Be my” Guest, you would have to be looking forward to that!
