Hello and welcome to another week of the SLF. I don’t know about locally but in this part of the world (NE Vic) the frosts have been spectacular lately. All this has led to a drying out of the topsoil, although not desperate we all wouldn’t mind and inch or two. But we can’t complain too much I was in WA last week and boy is it dry over there, it’s green down south but nothing really for the sheep to eat and the crops are struggling. If I thought that was bad I was in for a rude shock when I went North of Perth, just bare and dusty, the natives have never seen it like this, dust storms in June.

I’m told the royal had a healthy crowd of 21 turn up for golf on the weekend, that’s a great crowd. I’m also told that former gun Marnoo and Donald ruckman Daryl “Norman” May made it down for a hit. I remember years ago trying to recruit the big fella, I guess some just need more time.

A big contingent is heading to Bruce “Boofhead” Hendy’s favourite course Glenorchy, commonly known amongst Royal golfers as “McBeal” (I have explained it before). The form of the Royal team should see a few of them take home a prize or two, but I’m a little bit concerned because a few of the crew are camping over a Stewart “Smacka” MacPherson’s place and backing up again on the Saturday. Sounds dangerous!

“Richo Richo man, I want to be a Richo man”, that was big Rexie’s call on Friday night as he bellowed the rendition to the tune of the Village People song “Mucho Man”. Top win by my team The Tigers and it has been a long time coming but I will really enjoy that half a dozen stubbies I won of St Arnaud celebrity Jamie “Sheedy” Douglas.

I missed the game myself after a longish lunch with former Callawadda native Sandy “The Know All” McGregor and newly crowned Landmark St Arnaud joint owner Damian “The Major” Drum. I’m told The Know All doesn’t do the long lunch quite as often as he used to but it’s good to know he’s still can.

You can’t hide around this joint there is always someone around. This little old struggling reporter was just down at the local tavern having a quiet one or two when Andy “Upstart” Nisbet rocks in. I still only had my couple but I’m told that the young consumer was in top form and made himself well known to the natives as the night went on.

I circulated a few profiles around at Legacy day, just to get a bit of an idea on how your favourite SLF celebrities tick. However I haven’t received too many back, in fact only one. Here is the profile of John “Be My” Guest:

SLF Name: Be My or Major Mitchell. How would you describe your personality? “Strange” That’s my family’s opinion. What would your friends say about you? Strange, Weird and adventuress. Late or Early? When you live in a house with your sister and two daughters, your never early. Wildest place you have been? Bamaga by dirt bike, Mt Panorama for the Australian MC GP in the 80’s. But of late it has to be CONFEST! A place you would love to go? Antarctica, while it’s still there! Or space and beyond. Most admired local Farmer? It’s a toss up between The Guru and Snoopy! Beef or Lamb? I like all meat’s especially seafood. Drink? Mornings: Coffee, Black. Lunch: Coke. Dinner: Coke. Water in between and beer on the weekends when I’m out. What or who makes you laugh? Being with the expert golfers after a round of golf. What frustrates you? Women, especially when you have to be somewhere and they still can’t decide how they should look…..Arrrggg. Favourite SLF Personality? It’s a toss up between Entanglement and Boofhead. Best thing about living in the Marnoo district? Great community with a great group of personalities within the community.

Thank you very much for that “Be My”

That’s about all and remember what Henry Ford said, “Thinking is just about the hardest work of all, that’s why very few engage in it”

Hello and welcome to another week of the SLF. I made a return to the village on the weekend and I would have to say that things in the district look exceptional. As someone said it may just turn out to be the perfect year. The perfect year would be good start, dryish winter and wet spring, dry harvest, good prices and yield and good sheep and wool numbers. We are on the way!!

I attended the “Royal” legacy day and a great day was had by all. The course, well that is in absolute magnificent condition and conducive for good golf. A crew from Stawell took the honours with some impressive numbers, 13 under the card. They are “Tiger” type figures.

I was impressed with the welcoming from Presidento “Graeme “Grey Skies Above” Ellen. I think we all knew he would do a wonderful job as head honcho.

The favourites performed at Legacy Day with the usual consumers coming to the fore. SLF legend “Norm “The Guru” Duxson was in top form after teaming up with Chris “Entanglement” Webb, Geoff “Bronco” McDougall and Peter “Numbers” Knights. They were seen on a regular basis sipping away at the Green Ginger wine during their round.

The arrival of “Mr Plod” didn’t surprise anyone as one likely lad spotted the uniformed one from a long way out. A couple of mature young gentlemen decided to give a rear end welcome. Let me say that Mr Plod was not to happy.

Armand “Herbie” Duxson was another one in good touch, so much so that he started feeling a little crook when he got home.

I’m told that a couple of Reading lads stumped the fire early on Sunday morning.

My Yarrawonga mate Dwain “Duxsy” Duxson also made the return trip back for the event, he told me that one thing he doesn’t attempt these days is driving home on Legacy night. He recons his record isn’t to good.

All the talk is the reunion in July, some organisers are talking 500 as an attendance figure. If that is the case then it would nearly be the biggest night ever seen in the village. I’m sure the stories will be tall as the members of the 1987 premiership team start sprouting.

At least my team the Tigers didn’t get beaten over the weekend!!

That’s enough.

Welcome to another week of the SLF, another week goes by and another loss to the Tigers, once again close but no chocolates. What about the bombers aren’t they flying, I can virtually see the cheesy grins on the faces of all (and there are plenty) the bombers supporters in the Marnoo district.

Speaking of the bombers, could Kevin Sheedy be there for another 10 years, anything’s possible.

Former Marnoo fruiterer John “Fruity” Nisbet pointed me to an interesting website last week. The website is run by former native Kevin “Bloody” Court (or that’s who we think it is) and features some history on the Marnoo Footy Club. There are quite a few blanks that need filling in but it will bring back some memories. Simply go to www.marnoofc.footypedia.com

I see on the website that Marnoo beat Banyena in the GF in 1908. I wonder if “Bocky” Burn played in that game!!!

Whilst on the site go to season 1954, there are several reports and some famous district names featured.

All the talk is about the 87 premiership reunion, should be a great event and I’m very curious about the “unveiling of the new scoreboard”. Could it officially become it’s unofficial name “The Barry Lang Memorial Scoreboard. We will have to wait and see.

My team Yarra endured their first loss over the weekend going down to Wang by 50 points, apparently the boys had a day they would like to forget.

The natives and others are looking forward to Legacy day this Saturday. One team captain “Fruity” Nisbet has ordered NO DRINKS for his team which features my fellow Yarra resident Dwain “Duxsy” Duxson, Derek “The Mayor” Cameron and his brother “Gary “Larry” Cameron. I’m sure the big fella had his tongue firmly planted in his cheek when he made that statement.

Celebrities Stewart “Smacka” MacPherson and Armand “Herbie” Duxson couldn’t decide who was going to drive to the ball last Saturday night. They thought they would make the decision after their round of golf. Things started to take a bit of shape when Herbie was allocated to play with Chris “Entanglement” Webb and after nine holes the message was sent saying “tell Smacka he’s driving”

The second most sort after trophy at the Royal was won by newcomer Trent “3 iron” Carter. He scored a 3 shot win to take the 2007 ANZ Cup.

The season is spot on in most parts of Eastern Australia but spare a thought for our fellow farmers in the West, they are heading for back to back droughts, something they have probably never experienced. I’m told that the farming country North of Perth all but blew away last week with seed from dry sown crops ending up paddocks away.

Still even though things look good always remember John “Jack” Cameron’s statement “The drought aint over until the creeks are flowing and all dams are full”

Welcome to another week of the SLF. They tell me it is quite damp around Marnoo, which is good but remember what Jack said, she aint over til the dams are full and the creeks are running.

When the golfing gods are against you there is nothing you can do. Ever consistent Wallaloo East golfer Rod “3/8 rod” Reading was having, by his standards, a pretty ordinary day. It only got worse on the 11th when his tee shot went into the trees. His ball right up against the tree Rod pulled out his trusty, favorite 6 iron, lined up and bang, the ball went about 2 meters ahead further into the trees. Coming out he was holding half the club in one hand and the other half in the other hand. Snapped it clean in half. One quick wit was heard saying "and your wife thinks you are down here enjoying yourself".

Ben “Lucky” Duxson hit one into the very shrubby shrub on the 1st and the ball came to rest up against the base. After assessing all option he decided the only way out was to hit the ball left handed, and try to get it just out of the tree. He can't have been thinking of this tactic when he entered the tree as he got good contact the ball speared out straight into his stubby and then into his golf bag. He didn’t mind the 2 shot penalty but losing ¾ of the stubbie was a bit to much to take

Good to see big Armand “lids” Duxson back on the course on the weekend. After having 5 shots to get past the big tree in the first hole, Lids recovered well to shoot a first up 98. The big fella can sure hit a ball and would be a very good golfer, but his games may be limited by the return of his globe trotting girlfriend Marcia, in early July.

Josh Reading continues in good form with a very good 79 off the stick and is leading the prized ANZ cup. Josh on 132 points, the ever consistent Larry Cameron, and the not so consistent Trent Carter on 133 with Ben Duxson on 135.

Wallaloo Golf Club has the annual trip into Stawell this Thursday to the legacy day dinner. The Golf Club is held in very high esteem by Legacy for the work it does in raising money for this very worth while cause. In what is one of the "must attend day's", for the year, the club is looking forward to a strong field of cashed up golfer's ready to hit the course in 2 weeks time. Even if you are not playing you are more than welcome to join in around the fire and try your luck on the spinning wheel. This year they will present a cheque for $2300.

The only contentious issue on Legacy day is late in the evening when patrons are vigorously debating the right method of cooking the chooks and the method of getting them out of the fire. I’m told that Chris “Entanglement” Webb’s nine iron did a brilliant job last year, but you will get much debate from poor old Tigers supporter Ronny “Gasper” Kinley who is more of a star picket man.
I think Doug “Flogger” and Laurel “Mother of Howard” McLennan will be keeping off the roads on Legacy night. Last year poor old Flogger got the fright of his life. After a red or two with his neighbour pulled out of the drive and only has about 1 km to his turn off so he thought the chance of seeing a cop out Marnoo way at that time of night was minimal, more chance of the muddy running again. To his surprise he sees big set of headlights coming his way. Cautiously he proceeds and gets closer and closer and by this time the car coming towards him had stopped he become even more worried. When he sided up to the car he looks in to see local identity Stewart "Smacka" MacPherson at the wheel with his balaclava on, the Golf Club treasurer Ben Duxson, with a stash full of cash, and another unnamed golfer bowed over asleep on dash board. The boys had had a few frothy's under there belt and where heading back into town. I don't think Flogger should have been the one worried about the cops.

The boys went down in the pennant GF 4 to 1, only Gary “Larry” Cameron came home victorious. But the crew of Larry, John “Be my” Guest, Bruce “Boofhead” Hendy, Lyle “Chopper” Johnson and Entanglement didn’t let the reputation of the club down by being last to leave the clubhouse at Warracknabeal. I’ve also heard that they have a tool-of-the-week at one of the Minyip pubs and guess what, Entaglement won it for this week.

We had a 100 draw at the cricket club on Sunday. People buy tickets for $100 and you count down until the last one and he or she takes the booty home. Well local, Ben “Lucky” Duxson managed second place with $750 and the winner, who pocketed $2500 was the bloke that organized the show.

The flyer for the 1987 footy reunion has just hit my desk thanks to Sandy “The Know All” McGregor and it looks like a night not to be missed. I’m just wondering what sort of music the Clip Clop Club play?

It’s a very golfy issue this week and thanks to my spies that sent the info down the line.

That’s about enough for this week
