The weeks are flying by
It still can’t seem to rain but let me tell you that the Marnoo area is still hanging on ok in comparison to other areas I have travelled. Anyway for what its worth a respected person in the grain industry (who predicted 2006 to be dry and 2007 to start out good and dry off in the second half of the year) tells me that 2008 will be a very good season. I suppose we can only wait and see!
Boom times ahead
I’m being very positive in this weeks SLF as I am hearing more regularly that post drought Agricultural is set to boom. I suppose it’s a case of hanging in there and the good time will roll. For some proof of this statement go to www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,22654771-643,00.html
Far and wide
Talking to Graeme “G Train” Ellen the other day and he mentioned that the tennis association has expanded by taking on Elmhurst and Crowlands. It would have been a long trip home when Chris “Entanglement” Webb graced the asphalt.
Cricketers lose in a close one
The cricketers failed to secure back to back wins as they went down in the last over of the day to Warracknabeal. Stewart “Smacka” MacPherson and Gary “Larry” Cameron led the way with the bat with 38 and 43 respectively whilst Jack McAllister managed 2 wickets.
He’s too quick for me
Marnoo unleashed Shaun “Chipper” Chipperfield on the weekend and the left arm quick was sending them down at around 140 kph. I’m told that he had many of the batsmen backing away but also had veteran slipper Derek “The Mayor” Cameron standing about five metres behind regular keeper Trevor “Junior” Pickthall. I’m told the instructions from The Mayor went like this “if anything comes this way then you go for it Junior”.
No news yet
A couple of members of the community where present at the Barley Banquet held over in the Mallee, sorry Rupanyup. No news has reached my desk thus far. As reported last week, I’m just wondering if the form of Trent “Irons” Carter continued.
That’s about all for this week

Another week
Well another week goes by and its only eight week until Christmas and it’s only 38 month until we all have to stop mulesing our merinos. At the time writing they were talking a little rain this week, let’s hope so as it would help at least someone.
Back the ute in
They tell me it was a case of “back the ute in” at the WSGC presentation night as Trent “Irons” Carter took all before him. I’m told the night was a fabulous night with many golfers and partners staying late into the evening.
G Train in form
Graeme “G Train” Ellen was in fine touch delivering the speeches on Friday night, he was only outdone by his wife Kay who entertained that masses with her speeches and gave her presidential husband a bit of curry as well.
Focus on 2008
For the first time office bearers where elected at the Presentation night with all thinking it was a major success. Office bearers for 2008 are;
President; Graeme Ellen, V President; Trent Carter, Captain; Sam Reading, V Captain; Phil Reading, Secretary; Lyle Johnson, Treasurer; Rod Reading, Handicapper; Josh Reading, Junior Development; Gary Cameron.
Cricketers off to a flyer
The MCC boys are off to a flyer with a brilliant first up win against ANA Boolite. Batting first ANA-Boolite where all out for 149 after being in a strong position at drinks of 3 - 112. Trent “Irons” Carter turned a lean first year back (2006/07) into a brilliant start to the 07/08 season by taking 5/12 to destroy the opposition. Trent is sure having a big month, cleaning up in the Golf awards, becoming vice president of the Golf club, having a brilliant ram sale and then bowling the cricket club to a first up victory. Unfortunately for the cricketers Trent is off to the Barley Banquet next week, but the form he is in it will be "look out ladies".
The Cameron Dynasty Continues
Trent “Irons” Carter was well supported by up and coming 13 year old, opening bowler Darcy “Son of Mayor” Cameron with 3/16. After taking the first 2 wickets of the day, Darcy then come on late to clean up the last batsman. The young fella has picked up a few yards of pace this year, is moving through the junior representive ranks, and with his uncle Gary “Larry” Cameron in control as Captain, expect a big year ahead from the young man. He also has his old man, Derek, to keep him level headed with tales off brilliance by himself at the bowling crease. And some real expert advice is not far away, with his Grandfather Jack, being Marnoo's superstar bowlers in the 50's, 60's and 70's. As mentioned a couple of weeks ago keep an eye out for Darcy's younger brother Brylie as well. Young Jacko has an eye like a dead fish and his batting prospects are huge, so it won’t be long before he is teaming up with his old man and destroying the attacks throughout the Wimmera-Mallee.
Off to a flyer
Requiring 150 to win Trevor “Junior” Pickthall and Stewart “Smacka” MacPherson decided to take it upon themselves to win the game. With a brilliant and entertaining opening stand of 131 in only 19 overs, Junior and Smaka dismantled the ANA-Boolite attack with ease. So dominating where both players that they both moved past 50 within one ball of each other. Smaka, 67, opening the batting because of a wedding commitment (no not his own), he may have found the key to his success as a batsman. With an aggressive mind set, combined with a good defense and great shot selection, the cricket club will be looking to Smacka for a big year with the bat and real of a few centuries in a 600 plus run year. “Junior” Pickthall was his ever determined, committed and positive self carrying his bat through the innings to finish with 69 not out. He is another batsman the Noo are looking for to have a 600 plus run year and if this can happen the Noo are sure to be right amongst the finals this year.
Bring on Langer
An encouraging debut was made by Scotch College recruit David “Crocky” Lang. Coming on first change he showed that given time he will become an important player for the club. A fit and strong young man, Crocky will add variation to the bowling attack and with a bit of confidence will add a bit of old fashioned mongrel. Not quite up to the mongrel standard set by ex Marnoo bowler John "Fruity" Nisbet we hope, as the ex Milkbar owner often found himself on the wrong end of the umpires and opposition players "good bloke' list. Although falling with a first up duck on the weekend, Crockey is more than capable with the bat, so a few good hit outs at Scotch college, should see him return to the Noo and fill the all-rounders role.
Not a good start
My Yarrawonga neighbor Dwain “Duxsy” Duxson has had a horror start to the cricketing season with scores of only 6 and 5 in his first two digs.
Thanks to my spies
Once again my spies have been in great form in delivering all the news about the district, keep it up.
Fit as a Marnoo Merino
They tell me that local consumer Armand “Herbie” Duxson has maintained his lean appearance since returning from his overseas jaunt. One fellow consumer indicated that he mightn’t be drinking enough.

Another week
Hello and welcome to another week of the SLF, can anyone tell me when it’s going to rain, I don’t know but it doesn’t seem to want too.
Swilling on the hill
I’m told the swill on the hill was a pretty quiet event this year as only a few made the climb to my old stamping ground, Mt Bolangum. It certainly is an event that needs the support of the natives to keep it going.
Cricket this weekend
The cricket for the MCC starts this weekend and it’s a new hierarchy this year with local go getter Gary “Larry” Cameron at the helm. The MCC have a very good team on paper and should win there fair share of games.
More news
The cricketer should provide plenty of fodder for this little column. The return of Armand “Lids” Duxson to the fray will be welcomed by this little black duck
All washed up
The Corporate Cup claimed its fair share of victims with a Terry “The Madman” Brear claiming it took until Wednesday to recover. Must have been the alcohol fuelled Strawberries that Lois “Naked Chef” Johnson provided.
What a roast
The meal at the Corporate Cup was again superb and the team of ladies led by The Naked Chef should be congratulated once again.
Late news
My Yarrawonga mates Dwain “Duxsy” Duxson and the lovely Paula tied the knot over the weekend after first getting together 13 years ago.
Fruit salad city
I’m told that a respected member of the Marnoo West community is making regular trips to the fruit salad city, Mooroopna. More details please.
The milk and the honey
I made as trip to WA last week and the placed I went were like the land of milk and honey, there will be some big results for many areas over there.

Another week
Hello and welcome to another week of the SLF, It was certainly a busy week last week with all the ram sales etc. The ram sales went very well and underlined the interest in the Marnoo merinos.
Successful event
The Corporate Cup at the Royal was once again a huge success for the club, 13 teams graced the Royals manicured fairways. However it was a little disappointing that a few teams pulled out as the club was looking at 20 teams at the start of the week.
H is for horizontal
I managed to get one team over from Yarrawonga, I was designated driver driving, Dwain “Duxsy” Duxson, Glen “Wally” Brear, Terry “The Madman” Brear and Murcus “H” Hargreaves. The boys had a great trip and will be spreading the word about next year’s event. One member of the crew couldn’t (H Hargreaves) hack the pace and was seen cuddling up to the fire at about 10 pm that evening. I guess that explains how he got gravel in his pockets.
Early morning wake up call
The Yarra lads arrived back at the house in Marnoo at about 2am and it was certainly a big surprise for Geoff “Bronco” McDougall who was camping in one of the bedroom. Bronco is down to help out with some dipping at Glendemar and wondered what the hell was going on when the Madman tried to jump into bed with him. It could have been worse, big Wally could have tried to angle his ample frame into Goeffs bed.
The Winner is Melbourne Gravity
Callawadda’s only Toorak resident Sandy “The Know all” McGregor bought home the bacon with a win after several years of trying. This years crew was made up of Jock and Maree McGregor and Graeme “G Train” and Kaye Ellen, they combined there skills to finish the day ahead of pack.
The 5th hole
A lot of the entertainment was centred around the fifth hole where local funnyman Stewart “Smacka” MacPherson was wowing participants with his sometimes generous odds. Many bets where taken and I think the bank walked away “plenty” in front. One particular player in the Ausfarm group was offered 8 to 1 to hit the scrape, there was no danger as he managed to virtually square cut the ball and the money was firmly placed back in the kitty.
That’s about all as I have to catch a plane to WA (to do a story)
