Another week gone
Another week flies by and I managed to get back to the village over the weekend to tie up a few loose ends before we depart for South America. I will try and report back over the coming couple of weeks.
Cricketers going great guns
I managed to get to the MCG to see how the boys were going and I went away very impressed, Gary “Larry” Cameron has bought some youth into the team and they are getting some great opportunities. Will “Chick Magnet” McAllistar, David “Langa” Lang, Darcy “Son of Gun” Cameron and Brody “Dave” Smith are all talented cricketers and are making the most of opportunities.
Not just a pretty face
The Noo boys managed an easy victory against Birchip to keep the finals light flickering, it was an impressive win with Stewart “Smacka” MacPherson being the hero for the day. Smacka score his first century for Marnoo in what was described as a controlled and excellent innings. Marnoo managed a whopping 260 in their allocated 40 overs.
Up up and away
Trent “Irons” Carter showed that he is as adept with the willow as he is with the one wood after teeing off on several occasions at the MCG last Saturday. He hit 3 or 4 big sixes in his entertaining innings which bought a smile to grandparents Alec and Shirley who made the trip out from Stawell.
90 000 at the MCG
There was not quite 90 000 at the MCG Bill but it was pleasing to see a big crowd on hand to support the team, the many members that turned up certainly had a good day.
It’s an easy game
Gun Tennis player Josh “Studall” Reading showed that the transition from Tennis to Cricket can be an easy one if you have the talent. Readings first ball was a juicy full toss from the Birchip left arm quick of which Reading despatched it through the covers for 4, and with a perfectly straight bat.
Upside down
I heard a funny story about living legend Jim “Mr Real Estate” Barham, he couldn’t work out why his rhubarb wasn’t growing, so he called in resident rhubarb expert Dr Goff Letts. Letts had a small chuckle and pointed out to his drinking partner that he’d planted it the wrong way up!!!
Now that’s entertainment
Stories are surfacing about the Nigel “Winebar” Slee bucks night, I’m told the entertainment didn’t arrive until 3am which upset many, especially the nameless bloke who’s priority it was to see the entertainment. Apparently he had given up all hope and took himself to bed just before the action happened and then woke up just after it had finished.
Night owls
Gary “Larry” Cameron and Rueben “Rostron” Cheesman where the two revellers who went right through the night, which is some sort of record for an event held at the MCC clubrooms. The last two blokes to see the sun come up at the MCG where hardhead cricketers John “Noisy” Nisbet and Dwain “Duxsy” Duxson. Nisbet is in denial that his record has been broken.
Hat please
Young Angus “Choppy” Johnson was not very happy with his new short haircut, so he ordered mum to buy him a %&*#* hat.
Hall of fame
I see where Laen bird lover Ross “Budgie” Loats was enrolled in the Bendigo Country Week Cricket hall of fame. He has played 106 games over many years. I remember when I was a young fella sharing a room with Loats and coming in late at night and turning his electric blanket on 3 night after night. It didn’t make him to happy as February in Bendigo consists of many hot nights and he always woke up in a sweat, not the ideal preparation for a days play.
That’s all folks

Another week
Welcome to another week of the SLF, I see where there was a fair bit of rain through Qld, NSW and Vic with Marnoo missing out in comparison to other areas. My question is does this signal the end to the extended dry period we are experiencing? Well there is talk of a huge flood down the Warrego which leads into the Darling which should fill the Menindee Lakes system and then flows into the Murray through SA. Wouldn’t that give big parts of the country a boost?
Brown rice, very nice
It rained in Yarrawonga all of Friday night, all day Saturday, all of Saturday night and halfway through daylight hours of Sunday Morning for around 2 inches. I cannot remember that happening for a very long time, maybe 10 or 15 years.
Slam it Sam
Outspoken AFL guru Sam “Slammin Sam” Kekovich has come up with a bewdy, he is suggesting we have Australia week instead of Australia day and therefore all fair dinkum Aussies can consume a minimum of 21 meals of lamb over that period. Sounds good to me.
Letts reaches milestone
Former NT and Kanya legend Goff Letts I’m told reached a birthday milestone the other day. All the best from the SLF desk.
The event of the week
The event of the week would undoubtable be Nigel “Winebar” Slee’s bucks show last weekend, reports are scratchy and they are telling me it was a tame event. The buck shows aint what they used to be, I remember when shows where scheduled a day or two before the event. Also bucks get of light these days as in the old days you would get tar smeared on the genitals or be thrown on a train naked and sent miles away. I will see what I can dig up during the week.
Engaged
I see where former Marnoo PS graduate Luke “Shiiddt” Healy has got engaged to his lovely partner Mel and they are having a big party to celebrate there engagement, I maybe wrong but it smells like something bigger to me!
Close to the action
My trip to WA last week included a visit to the WACA for the 3rd test, I have to say that the facilities are nothing on the MCG and it had a completely different feel about it but it was good. It was like watching from say Central Park, you where super close to the action and you could hear what the players where saying. I caught up with many farmers at the event non funnier than Mt Barker legend Bruce “Lefty” Wright who seems to control the members bar.
Washout
The cricketers had a washout and will play a one day game next week.

Another week
Welcome to another week of the SLF. Today I am writing this from 30000 feet as I make my way to Perth for a (bad) Journalists convention, whilst there I might even call into the cricket for a day or two.
Up up and away
In two weeks time I will be heading to South America and if I can do it I will bring you an Argentine or Chilean perspective. I am up with the lingo having travelled to that part of the world once before, I can definitely remember the important words Sevasa (Beer) and Vino (Wine), there’s not much else I need to learn!
Open for business
Whilst travelling through the village the other day I noticed that a new cafĂ© was open, the joint must be really going ahead! I’m told that a leading Marnoo East farmer even tried the menu. Who ever you are all the best and I am looking forward to the positive feedback from the natives.
A much needed win
The MCC recorded a sensational win at Wycheproof last Saturday, having bold the home side out for 130 the Marnoo top order did the job with only one wicket down thanks to a brilliant 77 not out from opener Trevor “Junior” Pickthall.
Jacks back
I called in on living legend John “Jack” Cameron last weekend to see how he was getting on. He told me he is seeing a specialist about his crook hips and is hoping for some relief. “If that doesn’t work then just take me North” he said sitting on his back veranda.
Don’t mention the war
I’ve been gagged, a concerned contributor has asked if I can stop writing about this particular subject. I guess, because I can’t write about it anymore you will have to start guessing as to what I’m talking about.
Around the bend
I caught up with Peter “Crackers” Keenan in the local at Yarra on Saturday night and the bloke I was with introduced me as being from Marnoo. “Marnoo” Crackers said, “I’m still having nightmares about Marnoo” after he delivered a sportsmans night for the MCC and got caught late at night with a few consuming cricketers.
