Welcome

Welcome to another edition of the Square Leg Files. Another quiet week in the Marnoo district, sorta in between seasons, Cricket & Golf, Harvest and Sowing etc . I have however, given a few predictions for the year ahead, see them below. Here we go….

Don’t worry about round 1

There will be many out there who write of teams after round 1, but from experience my warning is “don’t”. People will be selling down the value of teams like Western Bulldogs, St Kilda etc but they will bounce back, will be interesting in the next couple of weeks.

I’m turning the bloody phone off

Former fruiterer and arguably (big argue) Marnoo’s fastest ever bowler John “Fruity” Nisbet was getting ready for the assault well before it was going to happen. When I spoke to him last Thursday he mentioned that he was ready to turn the phone off if the Bombers beat the Bulldogs. Well they did. I know Fruity tipped that a couple of selected Marnoo Bombers supporters in particular would be trying to contact him after the win.

Autumn weather to die for

I don’t know if you agree but I reckon Autumn is the best time of year, the mornings are crisp and a little damp, the wind is usually calm, the sun is just warm enough but not to hot and the days are slightly shorter. Gotta love it

Golf just around the corner

The golf season is about ready to fire up and this season will be an interesting one. Golf seems to be a little stale in the area (I mean the Wimmera) with Wallaloo one of the few shining lights. However the Royal can’t rest on their laurels and just keep churning out the same old fixtures, they need to come up with some new and innovative fixtures to keep the younger members of the community interested. Any thoughts……

Square Legs tip for this year

We will have 30 inches for the year at Marnoo. The October Ram Sales will be the biggest ever. Trent “Irons” Carter will win the golf championship by one shot from Rod “Rocket” Reading. Crops will get through with average yields despite the wet. The Muddy will have run 12 times by the end of the year. Someone in the district will come into a lot of money (like I mean a real lot). Brian “Farmer” Healy will get another good horse.

Welcome

Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the Square Leg Files. Not much news around at the moment so it will be brief.

Wally’s wedding

Part time Marnoo resident Wally “Wallace” O’Connor is about the tie the knot with the lovely Pilar next week in the town of Salto, Uruguay. Our very own Ben “Glendemar” Duxson has jetted of to do the duties of Best Man. We certainly wish them all the best for the big day and beyond.

Smithy fires up

Feisty Murtoa resident Dave “Smithy” Smith was in peak form at the Cricket Semi Final 2 weekends ago when Marnoo were playing Donald. I’m told that the Donald boys where doing a bit of sledging and Smith thought it was his duty to give some back and he did. The verbal stoush between Smith and Donald Captain Lachlan Jones went on for sometime after Jones failed twice with the bat. They didn’t come to blows but the language was colourful. I’m told by my spy that Smith took the honours….

Don’t miss this

Our sponsor www.thefarmtrader.com.au has recorded a cue by recruiting everyone’s favourite weather girl Jane Bunn to exclusively bring the weather to there Farm Talk platform. So each day just go to the Farm Talk platform and view what I consider to be the most detailed and accurate weather forecast around. It usually comes in at about 11am. Also don’t miss Monday’s Expert on Monday night 8pm, we have some very special guests each week. Just go to the Farm Talk platform.

Golf Season not to far away

It’s nearly time to dust off the golf sticks for another season ahead. I hear that the new season is set to get under way early April. I am guessing the couch grass would have had a great growing summer with all the rain around, this means that the course will be in tip top shape early and will maintain that throughout the year. That’s of course if it doesn’t get to wet.

That’s all folks

Welcome

Hello and welcome to another edition of the Square Leg Files. It’s been a quiet week with only one real news story coming across my desk. Here we go….

Cricketers go down by 1 run.

I spoke to a dejected Marnoo Captain Gary “Larry” Cameron who informed me that the MCC had lost their semi final clash to the newly formed Donald Cricket Club by 1 run. Larry we telling me they need 7 runs for the last wicket when a storm crossed the ground and delayed play for half an hour. When they resumed play the ball became very slippery making it hard for the Marnoo bowlers to control. This allowed Donald to get the 7 runs required, they then lost the 10th wicket after they had passed the score by 1 run. It’s a bitterly disappointing pill to swallow when you are so close to a grand final berth. Bad luck boys

Memories

Talking about the cricket final bought back memories of Marnoo’s famous “Bloodbath” victory. In that game Marnoo beat arch rivals Rich Avon by 2 wickets in a game where 3 players were suspended for bringing the game into disrepute. The action started when a Rich Avon player tried to trip Dwain “Daryl” Duxson, Duxson took a dive and it all got ugly from there. It did however fire the Marnoo side right up with fast bowler Andrew “Clown” Newell bowling one of the fastest spells of bowling you will ever see. It was a much savoured victory for Marnoo and they celebrated accordingly.

Hello Hello

Welcome again to another week of the SLF. I caught up with quite a few natives at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days last week which was good. I even managed to get a few stories….Here we go…

Field Days positive

The general feeling at the Field Days was very positive but a rumour that spread like wildfire could dampen some of the spirits. Apparently the talk is that 12 inches of rain is coming on the 18th of March. We will have to wait and see.

Cricketers in the Finals

I’m excited my favourite cricket team the MCC has made the finals and will now play off next Saturday and Sunday in the semi-final. There is a air of confidence that the MCC bowling attack has peaked at the right time and if the game is played on turf Marnoo will be right in the mix against there more highly fancied opponents. Let’s all get behind them and boy’s don’t look back, just give it everything.

Mayor would love to go out on a high

I spoke to arguably Marnoo’s greatest cricketer Derek “The Mayor” Cameron last week and he was hoping for a win last weekend (and he got it) so he could bow out of his illustrious cricket career with a finals gig. “The Mayor” said it is all too much now for the body and would love to be part of another MCC Premiership in his last game. “The Mayor” has played all his cricket at Marnoo and on his day was one of the most destructive batsmen in country cricket. Well done Mayor

Overcoming Pressure

It was a pressure situation the MCC had on their hands as they had to win the last game outright. Now let me tell you winning outright doesn’t happen to often and virtually everything has to go right. And obviously it did as I got the text through from Armand “Herbie” Duxson saying the job was done and bring on next weekend. Geez I’m excited and wish I could be there…….

Sales bonanza

I caught up with local funnymen Reuben “Rostron” Cheesman and Stewart “Smacka” MacPherson during the week as they assumed their usual role of talking sales people for another famous local identity Nigel “Winebar” Slee’s Wahroonga outfit. “Smacka” was telling me the “Wino” made quite a few sales during the Field Days but all those sales were made when either “Rostron” or “Samcka” had left the stand to go and have a look around. I think “Wino” employs them for entertainment value.

Time flies

I was drinking away in a pub (as you do) in Horsham last week when I spotted Young Robbie McAllister and his cousin Nick Reading, now I have been away from the area for some time now and to see these guys and how grown up they now are is a bit of a shock to the system because you can only sort of remember how they were. Robbie is fully entrenched in Horsham life and young Nick is also up there learning a craft. I’m not going to say whether young Nick was drinking frothies or not because I’m not exactly sure of his age. But anyway his dear old dad Mark was hunting around those areas at the same age many moons ago…..

Jumpin Johnny says continue

Talking to cropping guru “Jumpin” John Newall at the field days and he asked that I keep this little gig going because if I gave it away he would have to do it and he doesn’t want to.

A word from the sponsor

Former local Dwain “Daryl Duxson and his lovely wife Paula were manning The Farm Trader site at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days last week and said it was great to sign up about 70 new members. They said even a few locals signed up and the ones they spoke to now have a better understanding of what Product Tender does now. It’s a buying service and if you need to buy anything Ag related you just list it and The Farm Trader goes to work to find you quotes. To list just join or login then go to the Product Tender Page and click on list something. Will take you less than 2 minutes.
